To share the fascinating story of Martinsville and Henry County’s past; to help preserve our rich historical resources and become a part of a community of history lovers that is the Martinsville – Henry County Historical Society.

The Martinsville – Henry County Historical Society is a non-profit 501 (c) (3) organization that was formed in 1996 for the primary purpose of preserving and protecting the rich heritage and history of Martinsville and Henry County, Virginia.

The society is the common thread that binds Martinsville and Henry County’s past, present, and future.  Now in its 17th year, the Society has more than 160 members.

Blue Jeans n' Bling!


Blue Jeans n’ Bling Set for Sept. 24
Tickets are now on sale for Blue Jeans n’ Bling, a fundraiser sponsored by the Martinsville-Henry County Historical Society.
This year’s event will be held at the Historic Henry County Courthouse Plaza from 6:00-9:00 P.M.
Attendees will enjoy barbecue from Pigs R Us, a cash bar, and a silent auction.  Tim Martin and Friends will provide mountain music.  A 50-50 raffle will also be available.
Advance tickets ($30.00 per person) may be purchased from any board member, by calling 403-5361 during business hours, Wednesdays through Fridays from 2:00-5:00 P.M., and online at Brown Paper Tickets.  Tickets are $35 on the evening of the event.

Proceeds will allow the Historical Society to install new exhibits and provide lectures and activities on Martinsville and Henry County history.

"On The Shoulders of Giants: Furniture, Textiles and Tobacco" Exhibit



The Martinsville-Henry County Historical Society celebrates the area’s Industrial Heritage with a new exhibit, “On the Shoulders of Giants: Furniture, Textiles and Tobacco.” The exhibit honors the contributions made to our community by area manufacturers and the skilled craftsmen they employed as well as the ingenuity, resilience and fortitude they all possessed. Among the industries on display are Bassett Furniture Industries, Bassett Mirror Company, Hooker Furniture Company, Stanley Furniture Company, American Furniture Company and Gravely Furniture Company, Martin Processing, DuPont, Pannill Knitting, Sale Knitting, Bassett-Walker Knitting, and Fieldcrest Mills. Please stop by and take a walk through our heritage.
